I found this while looking for a Wozzeck video to link to - don’t ask me how. I find it interesting to track in how many ways this video makes me want to hurl, starting with the ever-popular “question title” that all reputable journalism employs nowadays (“Do braces make children dumber?” Well, I don’t know, but I sure suspect it now.)

I love the failed TV anchormen who have to feign enthusiasm reporting about babies who are already far more accomplished than they ever will be in the remaining 10-20 usable years of their lives. I love the logic of this: a) she was born to play the piano + b) she writes “much” of her own music = Amadeus? I, most of all, love the terrible unabashedness of starting the video with a line like “This is the story of little girl who was born with a gift,” and then stretching the metaphor past the point where it makes any sense: “And she opened that gift early.” ?!?!!!?!

Seriously, Emily? Can I call you Emily? You don’t know where this “comes out from,” but probably from your … heart? (Cue devastatingly cute smile that only 6-year-old girls with pink headbands can pull.)

Aside from the mother, who sort of terrifies me, I actually think that this is a decent story about a pretty decent kid. My cynicism comes entirely from the “Bart’s People” form of reportage being employed here, which tends to coat everything in such a syrupy mess (“It’s easy to forget that Emily’s still a child” = HUMAN ANGLE HUMAN ANGLE/do you know which is my favourite bunny of all the bunnies?) that all you can do is gape at the transformation of something that may be genuinely special into a four-minute Feel Good Moment.
