Man, why have I not heard of Manohla Dargis before? She is excellent. What a fresh perspective and fresh writing, and I am tickled silly by her decision to review not movies but moments in movies, which is how I think most of us remember movies anyway.
A highlight:
“Some of the greatest filmmaking of the year was represented by the story of a happy marriage, which was represented with breathtaking narrative economy and a great depth of feeling in four sublime minutes in “Up.” The rest of the movie left me fairly indifferent, but those four minutes will play on a loop in my head for years.”
Amen. That is exactly how I felt about that scene and that movie. In fact, I’m going to go see if I can find it on Youtube …
